Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  


Who we are?


The British Embassy in Skopje is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic, commercial and consular interests overseas and is currently looking to recruit a Driver.


The Embassy Driver is an essential member of the Corporate Services team, responsible for providing safe, efficient, and professional transportation services to Embassy staff and official visitors. The role ensures smooth logistical support for the Embassy’s operations and contributes directly to the wider objectives of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Ministry of Defence (MOD), with responsibilities split 75% under FCDO and 25% under MOD.


The jobholder will work closely with the Transport Manager, Corporate Services colleagues, and other Embassy departments to deliver timely and courteous driving services for meetings, official functions, and airport transfers. They will also assist with messenger duties and administrative tasks related to vehicle documentation and compliance. Maintaining vehicles in excellent condition—including regular servicing, cleaning, and safety checks—is a critical part of the role.


Main purpose of job:


The Embassy Driver will provide safe, punctual, and professional transport services for staff and official visitors, while ensuring vehicles are well-maintained and administrative requirements are met. The role requires discretion, reliability, and strong customer service skills, and involves occasional out-of-hours work and overnight stays in Kosovo.


Key Responsibilities:


1.Transport of Passengers, Goods, and Documents (60%)


  • You will provide safe and punctual driving services for Embassy staff and official visitors to meetings, functions, and airport transfers during and outside office hours. This includes planning routes, adapting to changing conditions, and ensuring passenger safety at all times.
    • You will also deliver mail, invitations, and official documents to government authorities and assist with processing permits such as airport passes. Overnight travel to Kosovo and occasionally in North Macedonia will be required.

      2.Vehicle Maintenance and Safety Checks (20%)


      • You will ensure all official vehicles are in excellent condition by performing daily checks (oil, water, brake fluid, battery, tyres), keeping vehicles clean inside and out, and scheduling regular servicing.
        • You will monitor fuel levels, arrange minor repairs, and report any issues promptly to maintain operational readiness.

          3.Administrative Support (15%)


          • You will maintain accurate journey records for all trips, track fuel usage, and submit vehicle check reports to the Transport Manager.
            • Additional tasks include managing timely car insurance renewals, vehicle registration, and assisting with purchases for office expenditure using official payment methods, ensuring receipts and proper accounting.

              4.General Support and Coordination (5%)


              • You will work closely with the Transport Manager and HMA’s Executive Assistant to plan transport requirements, support VIP visits, and provide logistical assistance for official programmes. You will also develop useful contacts and provide ad hoc support as instructed by the Transport Manager or Corporate Services Manager.

                Essential qualifications, skills and experience  


                Our ideal candidate shows:


                • Full professional proficiency in English and Macedonian (written and spoken) at C1 level (CEFR).
                  • Valid driving license and proven experience of at least 3 years as a professional driver.
                    • Strong knowledge of local routes and ability to adapt to changing conditions.
                      • Good communication skills, discretion, and customer service orientation.
                        • Basic vehicle maintenance skills and understanding of safety procedures.
                          • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
                            • Basic IT skills for scheduling and record-keeping (Outlook, Excel).

                              Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  


                               


                              Nice to have:


                              • Previous experience working within a diplomatic mission or international organization is an advantage.
                                • Knowledge of protocols and handling of ministers.
                                  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

                                    This is a full-time, fixed-term 12 month contract with possibility of renewal.

                                    The expected start date is March 23rd 2026 however, the job holder should be available to start as soon as possible.


                                    The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance.


                                    Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Skopje are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local (Republic of North Macedonia) employment law.


                                    Visa/work permit requirements:


                                    Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Republic of North Macedonia and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
